Soughs in the Wensley area

Tearsall Sough

This was started around 1635 and was driven from an underground swallow hole. It is the earliest documented example of this type of drainage. The initial portion of the sough from the swallow hole to its intersection with Dalefield Vein may have been constructed by enlarging a water worn passage. At this early period it is not likely that any cross-cut or level would have been driven through solid limestone.

The Sough was under constuction in 1767 and about 240 feet long at that time. A later survey in 1771 indicates that it was over 700 feet in length. Today it is about 900 feet long with what appears to be collapse at the end. 20 feet in there is a shaft up to the surface and another 20 feet there is there is a climb up to level that goes nowhere.
